From the article: "As it currently stands, this (1913 law) should only block couples who come from states where their marriage would be void, where a statute expressly says same-sex couples' marriage would be void. In the absence of that, there is nothing that prevents them from marrying here," said Michele Granda, a GLAD attorney. GLAD also argued in its brief that the state is using the 1913 law as a "weapon of purposeful discrimination." Yes. If Mitt Romney wants to lay down the letter of the law (not caring that it was created with expressly racisist intent) then he should fucking stick to it. Indeed it is clear that Mr.Romney, who has said would prefer not to have gay marriage AND civil unions is an enemy of human rights. It is that simple. What does that tell us? First and foremost, this country is overflowing with people who use "magic thinking" as their primary reasoning method. It was clear from the debates that John Kerry is much more intelligent man. George Bush so often didn't really answer questions specifically. More often his answers were simply "ra ra" exclamations which lacked substance. People voted for Bush's 'feeling'. To understand what I mean, try signing (with feeling!) "American Freedom, American Freedom". You can feel it even without a context but in reality it has no meaning. This is what Americans voted for, "moral values". Such a tired, empty phrase. The second thing that Bush's reelection tells us is that many Americans have never been taught critical thinking skills. Our failing education system clearly does not do that. The existence of MCATs so clearly illustrates that. Theoretically, MCATs exist for the sake of showing how well children in school are doing in certain subjects, however, schools are evaluated on how well their student body does on the tests, i.e. children are taking the tests for the sake of the system itself. But I want to talk about what is really at stake. George Bush being elected = a very serious threat to the US constitution, as he and the republicans will attempt to create a 'gay marriage ban'. This is a very serious affront to what is such a fundamental part of our Country and, in fact, the reason for which our country was founded, freedom of religion. It is so fucking clear that when "we say that marriage is between a man and a woman because the bible says so" that there is no separation of church and state. Let's make this further clear. There is no white bearded god looking down on us from space somewhere. This is the ultimate arrogant narcissistic magic thinking. We all live on this spinning earth in a space that is so vast we can't even conceive of it. Sorry, dude, but that is the reality. There is no "reason" so lets stop looking for it in some hocus pocus from 2000 years ago. It is absurd. If people could get over their need for some sort of "meaning" or "order" or need to feel superior (how completely arrogant) this world would be so much better.

sox, baby!

so amazing!! i am so happy. it will be interesting to see how this affects the city. if people will talk to each other on the T, for example. 1918 has hung like a dark cloud over our fair city for so long. and now it's gone. hooray!!!!!!
on a different note, i hope george bush will be gone, too. i was on the t after the game last night and a bunch of meat head college kids were reveling in their tear gas experience at kenmore square. i wish i'd had the nerve to say to them "you're the reason the woman was killed last week". you know they're voting for bush. fucking assholes. when celebrating means turning cars over you know something is seriously wrong. they should go see 'team america'. ouch. so funny!

What the fuck

So I'm a slack blogger...
I turned on WEEI last Friday durning the day and the guys who were on were talking about the previous night's presidental debate. They were obviously Bush supporters which is fine but I find it annoying to get political commentary
on sports radio. More annoying, however, was the fact that one of them was talking about how he would rather "have a beer" with Bush than Kerry. Is this really the level that things are at? I mean, during the debate it seemed to me that (for the first half of it) of the two guys on stage, one who could make reasonable statements and one was retarded. Don't the pauses bother people? It's as if he has to remember to turn his brain back on. While I do think that Bush faired better in the second half of the debate than in the first, it is just so embarassing that he is the president. Most of the time he just spoke in meaningless general exclamations. Do people not see that? The dude is not actually saying anything. Man, I really do think that the USA has great things to offer but are people that stupid here? It seems to me that people don't know how to think critically about things. Clearly our education system does not foster, support or value that. When MCATs/SATs become so important it becomes obvious that learning to think (it is a learned skill, not an innate trate) is a lot less important than getting a good score. I'd like to be better able to flesh out my thoughts so hopefully I'll get myself work on that here...
Seriously, what is it that people think Bush is doing that is working? All you have to do is drive down Mass Ave to see that the economy is not doing well. Count the number of empty storefronts. Seriously, what do people get from him?

so, two and a half months...

Yeah, it's been a long time so now I'm back...
What I'm wondering is how could anyone vote
for George Bush. Doubtless some of you reading this know me so I hope to see you soon! If anyone wants to comment, please do so. The main reason I started this blog today is because today is the best day by far in American history that I can remember in my 32 plus years. This is, obviously, because Gay Marriage has become legal in the great state of Massachusetts. I'm still shocked that something that makes so much sense and is so "liberal' has become a reality. Finally, America is moving towards a true separation of Church and State and the promise of the Pursuit of Happiness is becoming more of a reality for more people. The reason why the issue of Gay Marriage is so important is because it truly 'levels the playing field' in a way that is so obviously necessary if there is truly to be an end to oppression. What gay marriage does is move us all forward in recognizing that we are all human beings and that no one has or deserves any more special "status" than anyone else. It is truly everyone's privilege to be alive in this and every moment of our lives and no one is entitled to anything, especially suffering and oppression. Here is a quote that I believe sums up succinctly why the gay marriage "issue" is so important: "[For the married couple] The coupled identity is constantly reaffirmed, not only by the words and deeds of others , but also by the way others come to take the relationship for granted. This continual public confirmation gives them a stable location in the social world and validates their identity."

Gay marriage rocks!
